If you're new, Welcome! Be sure to check out the story from the beginning here:
Kawena Volume 1 Child of the Sky Part 1Teacher once told me, “There’s no difference between water and air.”
Just like then, I have always found his words to be true.
Whether it’s weightless wind threading my wings or water cupped in my webbed fingers as I propel through that dense world… in both water and air I always feel at home, and hardly recognize the moment when I traverse that line.
In the glittering slate-gray lake beneath me dozens of fish swished their tails back and forth in unhurried rhythm. They swam unaware of me hovering not too far above them in flows of wind so persistent I needed to only shift a single feather to hold myself steady in flight.
My pale grey reflection, covered almost entirely in the skins and scales of the very same sort of fish swimming the pocket of water below, was pierced only by a pair of vibrant golden eyes staring back at me as though I too were a fish being hunted. Instead of a tail or fins though, a long braid of silverblue hair lashed the air and occas

I almost forgot how relaxing it is to just sit down and sketch whatever comes to mind - this last week I've been doing a lot with school, and while I haven't had as much time for writing I did make some time to just let the words slip away and relax with some sketching. I wanted to draw Fallon and some of her stuff - she's a very subtle, yet passionate character, the type that the outgoing and somewhat  superficial and unsocialized So-Rin might easily misread. The sketch of her at the top of the page is of her serious face when she's trying to concentrate or think, and is one of the few times she prefers to have her hair out of her face. At the bottom is a rare moment showing Fallon in a relaxed moment, exercising her lovely voice by singing and talking to a fellow red bird, a male Cardinal! (They're just too cute - I have a couple pairs that come to our yard every year, and it's so interesting to see them come in, one pair at a time, and take baths together each morning right after I refill the bird bath!) Don't let her know you're watching though, or her face might turn just as red as her feathers and hair.

I wanted to sketch some of her stuff (the book and bag, as well as her shoes) to get the details of the type of gear she uses squared away in my mind while I write the next arc. The book has all sorts of mysterious writing, and a handful of sketches in it in the simple Avin language - a language that unfortunately So-Rin never learned to read or write. Her bag is made from woven plant fiber like her clothes, and is a bit too small to carry anything of much use aside from perhaps a bit of charcoal to write with and some food for longer flights. It's not Fallon's fault though - she's quite a bit smaller than the average female and can't carry very much without it impacting her flying ability. Just the barest necessities are all she ever brings.

I also sketched her wing (I'll have to do that for So-Rin too, since I see I don't actually have a reference showing his wings uploaded - ) her feathers are fluffy and soft, which although it's common in petite male songbird-types, is very rare to find in a female. They are also a very bright red just like her hair. She has a bit of a complex about her voice, bright color, and petite body and wishes she were more feminine-looking (which for many songbird types equates to being big, strong, and having a less "pretty" voice) not for attention, but to make it easier to blend in with and stand out less from the other Avin on her home Isla.

Finally there's a sketch of her shoes. You know what they say about shoes being one of a woman's many weapons... well, for the Avin on Nuva Isla reinforced shoes with an added pick are standard issue as everyday wear regardless of sex. They serve as additional defense against attackers, be they Avin or otherwise. For smaller Avin like Fallon it's one of few weapons they can easily carry at all times, and are further designed to support and strengthen the feet and lower leg, strengthening impacts and making it easier to pierce even the toughest of enemies. This easy-to-use weapon not only takes advantage of an Avin's powerful legs, but also provides extra distance between an enemy/target and gives protection to an Avin's number one asset and means of escape: their wings.

At the end of the day drawing things out really helps me by giving me an opportunity to focus on my characters and their world in a different medium, and helps relax the nagging in my brain that keeps on saying "you should really be writing that essay right now."

Thanks again, my fellow creative Deviants for reading this far, and for taking the time to give a gander to my little sketches! I don't often draw anymore, but it's a skill I'm hoping to nurture back again to at least a halfway decent state after neglecting it for the last couple of years, hopefully to the point that I might be able to do some fun illustrations or draw scenes from the story I've been writing over the last few months whenever I get stuck or need a break from life. Keep being awesome everyone!
